Good performance and durability
I really like my Castaic. It is a touch large, but as far as the weight goes, it is only .3 oz heavier that the Daiwa Zillion Type R. I get really good performance out of mine. With 1/4 oz and above weights I get the same performance out of this reel as I do my Core MGFV. The one thing that I do like is the larger capacity spool. I helped a friend of mine practice for a big tournament down on Lake Murray in SC a couple of years ago. I pitched and flipped a lot of lay downs and docks in the rivers. I took my Core on the first two days and almost ran out of line because of cutting loose hang ups. I was using 17lb mono. Took the Castaic out the next 5 days and never worried about it again. I just love being able to use my thumb to engage the clutch. I have gotten very use to using it on both of my reels. If I can help it I will never go back to using a conventional reel for flipping and pitching. I also use the reel to cast Carolina rigs. It throws really well. Plus, the reel is really easy to work on and service. A lot of folks really pick on this reel because of its size and weight. My Core sits lower on my rods and is easier to palm and hold. And it is no doubt lighter. But it also costs more than twice as much as the Castaic. The Castaic is rock solid and ballances out well on my Kistler flipping and pitching rods. I have been using mine for 5 years. I have had no problems with it at all and feel that it was money well spent. Crankbaitmaker
